Ammonium alum is a synthetic chemical sub-product of Caprolactam process, proceeding mainly from Thailand. Ammonium alum, also known as ammonium aluminum sulfate, is a type of alum that has various industrial and commercial uses due to its properties. It is a double salt compound composed of ammonium sulfate and aluminum sulfate. Some common uses of ammonium alum include: Cosmetics and Personal Care: Ammonium alum is often used as an ingredient in cosmetics and personal care products such as deodorants, antiperspirants, aftershave products, and skin creams. It works as an astringent and has the ability to reduce sweating and control body odor. Water Treatment: Ammonium alum can be used in water treatment processes to help clarify water by flocculating impurities and solid particles, allowing them to settle and be removed from the water. Paper Industry: It is used in the paper industry as a sizing agent to improve the paper's strength, durability, and printability. Textile Industry: Ammonium alum can be used in the textile industry as a mordant, a substance that helps fix dyes to fabrics and improve their colorfastness. Agro-chemical Industry: Ammonium alum, although widely employed, has at times been substituted with potassium alum, a more organic alternative. This shift is attributed to the increased preference for environmentally friendly options in various applications, including cosmetics and agro-industrial practices. Leather Tanning: It can be used in leather tanning to help remove impurities and improve the tanning process.
